چکیده

The American Indian population, made up of well over 300 tribes, now numbers more than 1.5 million or over 0.6 percent of the U.S. population. Throughout the recent past, it has been a rapidly growing population that has consistently had a birth rate twice that of the rest of the U.S. population (IHS 1988; May 1988; Broudy and May 1983). Because of this high fertility, the median age of the Indian population was 22.9 in 1980, compared to 30.3 for the overaIl U.S. population. The median age of the population living on reservation was 19 years in 1980 (U.S. Congress 1986). The young age composition has definite implications for the study of both motor vehicle injuries and alcohol.

Some thoughts about the epidemiology of alcohol and drug use among American Indian/Alaska Native populations.

Researchers have established that rates of alcohol and illicit drug use among American Indians/Alaska Natives vary by tribe, gender, and age group, making it difficult to get an accurate estimate of the actual extent of the problem of substance abuse within this population group. Although percentage rates of alcohol consumption are higher in non-Hispanic Whites, American Indians/Alaska Natives ...

Reducing Motor Vehicle-Related Injuries at an Arizona Indian Reservation: Ten Years of Application of Evidence-Based Strategies.

Unintentional injury is a significant public health burden for American Indians and Alaska Natives and was the leading cause of death among those aged 1 to 44 years between 1999 and 2004. Of those deaths, motor vehicle-related deaths cause the most mortality, justifying the need for intervention at an American Indian Reservation in Arizona (United States). We describe motor vehicle injury preve...

An emphasis on solutions rather than problems.

Numerous articles have been written about alcohol and American Indians. Few studies have actually addressed possible solutions to the problem. Dr. Phillip May's paper on alcoh...
